A California motorcyclist who suffered severe brain injuries when he crashed on a street where road crews were working in 2015 will receive a $6.1 million damage settlement from the city of Los Angeles in connection with the crash.
Philip Ramon Alvarez, who was 26 years old at the time of the crash on Oct. 11, 2015, was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Western Avenue just south of 25th Street in San Pedro when he rode over a series of holes that had been cut into the roadway by a city surveying crew, according to a Feb. 8 story by The Los Angeles Times.
Alvarez’s lawsuit against the city, which was filed in August of 2016, stated that the victim was working at the time as a part-time port worker who was hoping to work up to becoming a full-time longshoreman with full benefits. As a part-time trainee, he received no benefits, including insurance.
His attorney said Alvarez’s brain injury left him able to walk, but no longer able to work or live independently, the story reported.
The city reached the $6.1 million settlement in December 2018, but it was only recently approved by a vote by the members of the Los Angeles City Council.
