The family of a New Jersey man who died in 2018 when his car was struck by a school bus as he was driving to work will receive a $7 million settlement in connection with his death.
Harry McCracken III, 49, of Williamstown, N.J., was killed on Feb. 12, 2018, when a school bus struck the driver’s side of his Honda Accord at Tuckahoe and Glassboro roads in Monroe Township, Gloucester County, according to a Feb. 21 story by NJ.com. No students were aboard the bus at the time of the 4:15 p.m. crash.
Lisa M. Davidson, of Glassboro, N.J., who was driving the Student Transportation of America school bus, was cited for disregarding a traffic signal and later pleaded guilty to a summons, the story reported. The guilty plea, which was entered in November 2018 was made “with civil reservation,” meaning it could not be used against her in a civil lawsuit, the story continued.
The victim, who was married and had two teenage daughters, was heading to work as a warehouse supervisor when the bus traveled into the intersection and smashed into his car, which had a green light, the story reported.
After investigating the bus driver’s work history, the plaintiff’s attorneys found that she had a history of school bus accidents, suspended licenses and terminations and should not have been driving a school bus on the day of the crash, according to the story. The driver had been fired by three student transportation companies, including a previous firing from the company where she worked on the day of the fatal crash.
The settlement was reached with the bus company without a lawsuit being filed after both sides agreed to mediation in December. The settlement was reached after two months of talks.
