A Connecticut motorcyclist who suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2014 after he was struck by a car pulling out of a driveway as he rode his motorcycle down a street is receiving a $1.3 million settlement in the case.
The motorcyclist, 31-year-old Jeffrey Cipriano, was riding his Harley-Davidson on a street in Bethany, Conn., when a vehicle being driven by 74-year-old Margaret Wilson struck him, according to a May 23 story by The Connecticut Law Review.
The incident was recorded by a video camera located at a nearby business, which captured the crash as it happened and provided evidence which was used by the plaintiffs. The video apparently showed Wilson’s car leaving a strip mall parking lot and pulling directly into the motorcyclist’s path.
Cipriano, who filed his lawsuit in 2015, suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash. He was wearing a helmet. The case had been scheduled to go on trial in July, but a settlement was reached in mediation between the parties in May.
The victim has undergone three surgeries to resolve his injuries from the crash. An additional surgery to repair his right shoulder is also being considered. The victim is reportedly still having pain and limited use of his right shoulder, as well as issues with memory and speech. His lawsuit also claimed that he suffered a neck injury and temporary hearing loss in his left ear from the crash. His medical bills have totaled more than $300,000 so far.
