An Illinois family whose 7-month-old daughter was killed when an SUV ran into her stroller in a crosswalk as her father walked her across a street in March 2015 on a visit to San Diego’s Point Loma will receive a total of $18 million in two settlements that have been reached in connection with the crash.
The infant, Juniper Aavang, was being pushed in the stroller at 6:30 a.m. on March 2, 2015 by her father, John Aavang, 30, when they were struck in a crosswalk at Catalina Boulevard and Canon Street by a black Chevy Suburban being driven by David Allen Hoban, 47, according to a Sept. 13 story in The San Diego Union-Tribune. The baby’s mother, Ginevra Ryman-Aavang, was walking with her husband and child but was not hurt because she was walking ahead of the stroller.
The infant died of her injuries several days after the incident and her father suffered severe head injuries in the crash. The driver of the SUV stopped immediately after the crash and tried to offer assistance, the report continued. The driver said his view of the intersection had been obstructed by foliage in the area. The Aavang family was visiting the San Diego area from their home in Woodstock, Ill., at the time of the incident.
The family’s lawsuit alleged that the city “was primarily to blame for the crash, contending the intersection suffers from lack of signage and poor visibility that city officials never addressed despite receiving numerous complaints.”
The City of San Diego will pay $12.5 million to the family to settle their claims, while a separate additional $5.5 million settlement will come from the driver of the SUV and nearby property owners and a homeowner’s association who allegedly allowed foliage to obstruct driver’s views near the intersection where the crash took place, the story said.
