A motorcyclist who was seriously injured in 2015 by a flying highway work zone construction barrel that was flung into his motorcycle by a nearby dump truck has been awarded an $8 million damage verdict by a Georgia jury.
The motorcyclist, Ronnie Stevens, now 41, was riding his Harley-Davidson Street Glide motorcycle on Interstate 75 in Clayton County, Georgia, on Oct. 12, 2015, when a dump truck smashed into an orange construction work zone barrel on the highway and pushed it forcefully into Stevens’ motorcycle, according to a Nov. 15 story on the Yahoo Finance news site.
The dump truck, which was owned by JRK Trucking Inc. of Jonesboro, Georgia, was being driven by employee Donald Parks when it struck the barrel, which caused Stevens to lose control of his motorcycle due to the impact, the story reported. Stevens had been southbound on I-75 when the crash occurred.
The dump truck “attempted to move into a closed lane of travel in order to go into a construction site in the median of the highway and negligently struck an orange construction barrel,” according to court documents cited in the story.
Stevens suffered a fractured wrist and a shattered ankle in the crash, which later forced him to retire seven years early from the U.S. Navy due to his injuries, the story reported. Stevens had been a chief petty officer in the Navy. The ankle injury he sustained prevented him from completing the 1.5-mile run portion of the Navy’s physical readiness test, which he was required to pass.
The dump truck had left the scene of the incident but Stevens’ attorneys were able to find the truck that had caused the incident by reviewing records for all the contractors on the construction site, the story reported.
The jury deliberated for about two hours before issuing a verdict in favor of Stevens. JRK Trucking Inc. and the dump truck driver were found to be responsible for the crash.
