Did You Receive a DePuy Hip Replacement?
On August 26, 2010, DePuy Orthopedics announced the recall of the ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System, following data reports that it caused heavy metal toxicity. Since then more information has surfaced that problems with these products have been reported as early as 2007.
You may be in danger of serious health issues if you received a DePuy hip replacement in the years of 2007-2010. Even if you have not experienced any symptoms, it is important to talk to an attorney about your legal rights as soon as possible.
Has DePuy contacted you about your hip replacement surgery? Do you not fill out paperwork or sign any forms they give you. Doing so may reduce your chance of obtaining a fair recovery.

The Dangers of DePuy Hip Replacements
DePuy hips are made out of Cobalt, a heavy metal that is toxic even in small amounts. Because the hips are designed as metal on metal, Cobalt is released into the body as the replacement ball rubs against the metal hips socket. A case report published in the Journal of Bone and Join Surgery found that Cobalt levels were as high as 3300 µg /L in joint fluid just one year after the hip replacement surgery.
Symptoms of the metal toxicity vary according to how much Cobalt was released, and can include:
- Fatigue
- Hearing loss
- Ringing of the ears
- Tremors
- Cognitive decline
- Visual impairment
If you or a loved one has experienced any of these symptoms following a DePuy hip replacement, it is advised to seek immediate medical attention. Your medical reports may serve as key evidence in class action lawsuits or illness claims later on.
